In 2019, AVP and the Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies at Yale University Library (YUL) partnered to develop a significantly enhanced AV access solution for special collections: Aviary. Leading up to Aviary’s development, a Task Force at YUL worked to create a set of core requirements that any access system used by the library for digital AV collection access must adhere to. These included a need for highly flexible access controls, from the broadest to the most granular, for different types of patrons, to support a complex legacy of collection-based permissions at Yale. This presentation will focus on two units at YUL, with significantly different permissions requirements - the Fortunoff Video Archive and the Gilmore Music Library. It will consider how Aviary has been designed to support these different requirements, incorporating open access content through highly restricted content, and everything in between.
